St Mary the Virgin
A Thriving Congregation in Calne, Wiltshire
The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin stands proudly on the site of an earlier Saxon Minster. Its outer appearance, a skillful blend of stone masons’ art of five centuries, is Perpendicular, a feast of embattled parapets and pinnacles. A mighty 17th Century North Transept Tower replaces the fallen crossing tower. Exploring the interior reveals a transitional Norman Nave surmounted by the 15th Century clerestory covered by a superb wooden roof of the same date. The many treasures of the church range from an early Elizabethan chest to fine early twentieth century Art and Craft screens. In 1994, the Parish celebrated the 750th anniversary of St. Edmund, a former Vicar of Calne, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1234.
What to Expect
Coming back into our church buildings is going to look very different.
Upon arrival you will be asked to wait to be assigned your pew, and everything you need will be provided for you, you are of course welcome to bring your own bibles or prayer books but please ensure that these are taken away with you at the end of the service.
Hand sanitiser will be provided at the entrance to the church.
We are only opening every other pew, and we will only be allowing one household per pew.
Due to current guidelines all members of the congregation will need to wear face masks, unless there is a medical reason as to why they cannot.
We are also unable to sing during the service, but there will still be music.
You will still be able to light a candle for a loved one. This stand is being moved to in front on the font to enable social distancing to take place. There will be a candle already ignited which can be used to light a tea light. There will also be a hand sanitiser station next to this.
We are looking forward to welcoming you back!
